Community Mural

The Gabriola Arts Council invites you to be part of Handmade Selfies: Portrait of a Community by creating a self-portrait on one of our official panels. We'll create our community portrait by exhibiting all the submitted self-portraits as a large mural in the Gabriola Community Hall on the closing night of the Isle of the Arts Festival, Saturday, April 13th, 7:00 - 10:00 pm.

Everyone can participate, no matter how little artistic experience you have (see below)! You can be as creative as you wish but we must be able to hang your portrait with pins (it can’t be heavy or have loose parts).

This is a project for everyone! Here’s how to get involved:

1. All portraits must be on official embossed panels. Get yours from North Road Sports.

2. Clearly print your name, address and phone number on the back of your official self-portrait panel and, if you are part of a group submission, the name of your group.

3. Your self-portrait is to be of your face only; your face must fill the panel.

4. Your self-portrait must be made by hand. Unaltered or mechanically filtered photographs are ineligible for submission.

5. You must be the sole creator of your submission to the Community Mural.

6. Your portrait can be created in any medium.

7. The embossed stamp on your portrait must remain visible.

8. Your self-portrait can be submitted in either landscape or portrait format.

9. Submitted self-portraits will be exhibited in the Community Hall on Saturday April 13th 2019, 7:00 - 10:00 pm. Panels will be exhibited in the salon style.

10. Panels MUST NOT be mounted onto backing material.

12. You must ensure that all parts of your portrait are secure and that your portrait panel can be suspended against a wall with pins.

13. Portrait components should not breach the borders of the official panels so as not to impede the display of neighbouring panels.

14. Your portrait can be delivered to the Arts Council’s Jack Pine Cabin, Tuesday-to-Friday 10:00 am to Noon; 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

15. Your portrait can be picked up from the Arts Council’s Jack Pine Cabin after April 15th. The cabin is open Tuesday-to-Friday 10:00 am to Noon and 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Can’t draw? No problem! Check out the self-portraits below for style suggestions accessible to everyone!
